Reflection on Key Concepts (Module 2)
Module 2 of the specialization course was much more practical, but in spite of that, there were also many concepts that will always accompany me in my daily life as an English teacher. The most important ones are the following:
Artificial Intelligence applied to ELT: As I mentioned before in this blog, I believed that artificial intelligence tools were only useful for our students because I had the misconception that they were limited to giving answers to the questions we asked them. However, I now know that there are specific tools for us teachers so that we can create didactic material specifically for our students, such as images, presentations, videos, audios, etc., related to the topics being studied.
Read Along: A new and very important concept that we as teachers should be aware of is Read Along. It is a Google tool that helps children learn to read, but it is also available in other languages, so we can use it to assign readings in English so they can have their first approach to what could be their second language. During the beginning of the second module, we had the opportunity to collaborate with a project that sought to choose appropriate readings for students in El Salvador. In order to do so, we used not only our perception but also Gemini's GEMS. With this, we were able to select the readings that most closely matched what we are used to seeing in the classrooms of El Salvador.
Learning Assistants: Both students and teachers are used to AI tools giving us an infinite amount of information about the subject that is requested. However, now there are AI-Powered Bots such as Poe, NotebookLM, and Gemini (GEMS) to which we can give a specific function. This can be to act as a teacher, as an expert in a specific subject, or as our assistant. With this, we will get the AI tool to guide us in our search for information and not just give us whole pages that may not be useful. In the case of teachers, it could help us to have the opinion of an expert in Lesson Plans and thus our classes would be much more effective.
I plan to apply these concepts in the classroom through the creation of a unique AI-Powered Bot for planning my classes. With this, I will be able to improve my teaching method and the activities my students do. First, little by little, I will gather the necessary information to create my prompt, since this is fundamental for the bot to do the work I need, and then I will be able to apply the advice that my Learning Assistant will give me.

I really enjoyed reading your reflection! I agree that Module 2 was much more practical, and it’s great how you highlighted the value of tools like Read Along and Learning Assistants. I had a similar misconception about AI, but now I see how powerful it can be for us as teachers. Not just for generating content, but for guiding our planning and improving our lessons. Besides, I really liked how you explained the use of Read Along and the way you applied GEMS to select readings.
